Issue complimentary gift cards
Give someone a gift card for free, for example as a prize or goodwill, without them paying for it. Complimentary cards are balance only and never enter accounting.
You need the owner, admin, or manager role.
Issue a complimentary card
Go to Products -> Gift Cards.
Click Issue complimentary card.
Enter the Amount. If you have more than one legal entity, choose the Legal entity (this sets the currency).
Optionally add a Recipient name and Recipient email.
Optionally set a Custom code, or leave it blank to generate one automatically.
Choose a Reason and add a Note (both required).
Click Issue card.
Send the card to the recipient
Issuing a card does not email anyone. To send it:
Open the card from the Issued cards tab.
Click Send gift card.
The card must be active and have a recipient email. If the Send gift card button is missing, add a recipient email to the card first.
Selling versus issuing
Selling a gift card is a customer buying one and paying for it through your website; that is set up as a gift card product.
Issuing a complimentary card (these steps) gives balance away for free. There is no payment, invoice, or VAT, and it is kept out of accounting.
Troubleshooting
The recipient did not get an email. Issuing never sends automatically; open the card and click Send gift card.
"This code is already used." Your custom code matches an existing gift card or discount. Pick another, or leave it blank to auto-generate.
You are a staff or teacher user and cannot issue. Complimentary cards need an owner, admin, or manager.
The amount, reason, or note is missing. All are required.
